  DR ABID ALI KHAN

“The sole meaning of life is to serve humanity”

Many people in this world inherit money or property from their ancestors and others inherit good traits like personal quality and interest from them. It is our responsibility to pass on what we inherited, no to squander it, but to build on it.

A Retired Director of Forest (Govt. of Sindh), Dr. Abid Ali Khan is a man of fortune, who inherited both of them. He belongs to an educated and refined family of Jhuddo city, district Mirpurkhas, Sindh. He had a great love for nature in his heart from his childhood.

He achieved his earlier education from his hometown then completed B.Sc. and M.Sc. (Zoology) from University of Sindh, Jamshoro. He completed his second B.Sc. in Forestry from University of Peshawar, M.S in Sericulture from National University of South Korea and returned as U.N scholar after completing Ph. D from South Korea. He got trainings in various fields like, in Natural Silk from China and South Korea, in Coconut Cultivation from Sri Lanka, training in Apiculture (honey-bee keeping) from PARC Suwon Korea.

Dr. Abid said, “I was very much intelligent and hardworking student throughout my education career. I got scholarships on merit till my Ph. D. so financially, I did not faced any hurdle in my way to achieve education. I stood first in district Tharparkar, in 1957 and won scholarship.”

A well-dressed, seventy-one years old, grey-haired and grey-eyed antique man with wide Latin moustaches, having a walking-stick in his hand, sits with pride and self-determination. He has inherited the spirit of helping humanity from his ancestors.

His grandfather was originally from Jaipur Jodhpur, captured by African people during the First World War, but got freedom at the end of the war, with the help of British and also got job in Gujrat due to his education. After that, he tried to help other captives and worked really hard for their freedom.

Dr. Abid’s father, Late Haji Sadiq Ali Khan was a Station Master in Mirpurkhas who exchanged his property to Jhuddo for business purpose in late 1940s and got profit of about Rs.10, 000. He spent much of his money for the development of Tharparkar.

“I am highly motivated by my ancestors but I am also inspired and impressed with the Nawab of Lucknow, Mr. Wahaj-ud-din Ahmed Kirmani’s honesty, dedication, intelligence, hard work, discipline and what not.” said dr. Abid.

He got married in 1973, and is blessed with three sons and one daughter. All of them are well settled.
After retirement, many folks think that they are dependent, it is their only fate to rely on pensions and they are unable to work anymore, but dr. Abid never felt like that, he is highly enthusiastic and passionate to help needy and poor people. No doubt, he is a retired old man, but he is not obsolete for the society. He do not rely or depend on others despite of health issues.

Dr. Abid is suffering from arthritis disregarding this illness, he still help the needy and poor people, by providing them their requirements like, clothes to those who are unclothed, medicines to those who are unable to buy them, food to those who are hungry and jobs to those who are unemployed etc. and feels pleasure. He walks with the help of walking-stick but has an attitude of king.

He mentioned, “Since last 8 to 10 years I am handicapped because of backache and chronic arthritis in my knees but in spite of these, I used to walk with the help of stick and never allowed the disability to be an obstacle on my performance for willingness of Allah.”

A seventy-one years, physically old and ill man is still not really decrepit. He is working for the sake of development of humanity and welfare of society. He said that “It was my dream to get admission in Medical College but was not fulfilled due to some wrong policies. I prayed to almighty and never lost hope. Almighty gave me a title of Doctor”.

In addition, Govt. of Sindh inducted him in Red Crescent society as an Incharge of the Institution of Cardiology in Red Crescent Hospital, unit no. 2, Latifabad. He told that “During my stay in Red Crescent General Hospital, I observed helplessness of poor masses of rural, as well as, urban areas of Sindh”. People say that “He is sentimental, emotional and kind-hearted person by nature. He used to help the employees of department by providing them help to enable them achieve their rights. He also gave jobs to poor masses, living in vicinity of forest who were laborers.”

According to him, “Our inner strengths and truths cannot be lost, destroyed, or taken away. Every person has an inborn worth and can contribute to the human community. We all can treat one another with dignity and respect, provide opportunities to grow toward our fullest lives and help one another discover and develop our unique gifts. We all deserve this and we all can extend it to others.”

It is true that by cultivating the beautiful we scatter the seeds of heavenly flowers, as by doing good we cultivate those that belong to humanity.
